Your day starts at 8:00 AM with pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. Your guide meets you there, and you head out on the Cairo–Fayoum desert road in a private air-conditioned 4x4.
Because the vehicle and guide are dedicated to your group only, there's no bus schedule to follow. If you want to linger at a viewpoint or have a shorter stop for photos, the day moves at your pace. The first destination is Wadi El Rayan, a depression about 42 meters below sea level in the Western Desert.
Two connected lakes here are fed by Egypt's only waterfalls, formed decades ago when excess agricultural water was channeled into the reservoir. It's a strange sight up close: moving water cutting through open desert, ringed by golden dunes on every side.
From Wadi El Rayan, you continue on a 40-kilometer desert track through the protected reserve toward Wadi Hitan, passing Mudawara Mountain along the way, with views over Lake Qarun.
Wadi Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding fossil evidence of roughly 40 million years of whale evolution. A small site museum lets you walk right up to whale skeletons, sea cow remains, and fossilized sharks and mollusks.
Lunch is served in a Bedouin tent, with traditional Bedouin tea, before the drive back to Cairo, where you'll arrive at your hotel by evening.

Dress code: Light, breathable clothing is recommended for the desert heat, along with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Closed shoes are more practical than sandals for walking on sand and rock at Wadi Hitan.
Physical requirements: This tour involves walking on uneven desert terrain, including the site museum area at Wadi Hitan. It's manageable for most fitness levels, but not ideal for travelers with significant mobility limitations.
Weather: The desert can get cold in the early morning and evening, even when daytime temperatures are high. A light jacket for the drive is worth packing, especially in winter months.
