  • Cairo and Luxor hold the two richest concentrations of ancient monuments in Egypt, and this 7-day private tour connects them in a single, well-paced route. In Cairo, Egypt's capital, you'll spend three nights visiting the Giza Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure; the Great Sphinx guarding the Giza plateau; and the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara—the oldest large stone monument in the world. A private Egyptologist guide travels with you throughout, and every transfer is by dedicated air-conditioned vehicle: no shared groups, no fixed pace.
  • Instead of a domestic flight, you travel to Luxor by overnight sleeper train, a working feature of Egyptian rail travel since the 19th century and a practical way to cover the distance while you sleep, with dinner served on board. Luxor, once the ancient capital of Thebes, is home to the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank and the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes on the East Bank—Karnak alone was built and expanded by generations of pharaohs over two thousand years. Your guide leads you through both banks before a second overnight sleeper train returns you to Cairo.
  • Accommodation is 3 nights in a 4-star Cairo hotel and 1 night in a 4-star Luxor hotel, both with daily breakfast, plus half-board on both train nights. An optional full-day add-on to Alexandria—the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa and Qaitbay Citadel—can be added before your final departure from Cairo.

Day1

Arrival in Cairo
  • Your Egypt journey begins at Cairo International Airport, the country's main gateway and a common point of confusion for first-time visitors navigating passport control and baggage claim in an unfamiliar system. An Aten Tours representative is waiting at the arrival gate, ready to assist with entry formalities, baggage collection, and customs—so nothing about your first hour in Egypt is left to guesswork.
  • From the airport, a private, air-conditioned vehicle takes you directly to your 4-star hotel in Cairo, typically a 30–45 minute drive depending on traffic and your hotel's location. Many of Cairo's hotels for this tour are based near Giza or downtown Cairo, putting you within easy reach of tomorrow's sites at the Giza Plateau.
  • The rest of Day 1 is unscheduled, giving you time to rest after your flight, settle into your room, and adjust before a full day of sightseeing begins tomorrow. Overnight in Cairo.
Day2

Giza, Saqqara & Memphis — Ancient Cairo in Depth
  • After breakfast at your Cairo hotel, your private Egyptologist guide and air-conditioned vehicle take you to the Giza Plateau, home to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, built roughly 4,500 years ago as royal tombs for Egypt's Fourth Dynasty kings. Beside them stands the Great Sphinx, a limestone guardian figure with a lion's body and a pharaoh's face, and the adjacent Valley Temple of Khafre, one of the best-preserved examples of Old Kingdom architecture still standing on its original site. Your guide explains the engineering and religious purpose behind each structure rather than leaving you to read a plaque—the difference between seeing the pyramids and understanding why they were built this way.
  • From Giza, you continue to Saqqara, the burial ground of ancient Memphis and home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser—the oldest large stone structure in the world and the direct architectural predecessor to Giza's smooth-sided pyramids. Time is included at the surrounding Saqqara Necropolis to see the Mastaba tombs, whose painted interior walls depict scenes of daily life in ancient Egypt in far more detail than the pyramids themselves. The day concludes in Memphis, ancient Egypt's first capital, where an alabaster Sphinx and a colossal statue of Ramses II remain on their original ground.
  • For travelers who want to extend the evening, an optional Sound and Light Show at the Pyramids can be arranged—the Giza monuments are illuminated after dark, with a narrated history of the site. This is not included in the base package and can be added on request. Overnight in Cairo.
Day3

Grand Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo & Khan El Khalili — Departure by Sleeper Train
  • Your third day begins at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, the world's largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization and home to the complete Tutankhamun collection, including his golden death mask, displayed together for the first time since the tomb's discovery in 1922. Your Egyptologist guide walks you through the collection's key pieces, putting each object into the historical context a self-guided visit would miss.
  • From GEM, you continue into Old Cairo, the city's Coptic Christian quarter, to visit the Abu Serga Church—built over the site where tradition holds the Holy Family sheltered during their flight into Egypt—and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in Egypt and a rare surviving marker of the country's Jewish history. Next is the Citadel of Salah El Din, a medieval fortress overlooking Cairo, and its Mohamed Ali Mosque, an Ottoman-style mosque built in the 19th century that remains one of the most recognized Islamic landmarks in the city.
  • The day closes at Khan El Khalili, Cairo's centuries-old bazaar, with time set aside for shopping and browsing before your private vehicle transfers you to Giza Railway Station. There, you board the overnight sleeper train to Luxor, with dinner served in your cabin as the train departs—an unhurried, scenic alternative to a domestic flight that lets you cover the distance while you sleep. Day4

Arrival in Luxor & West Bank Tour — Valley of the Kings & Hatshepsut Temple
  • Breakfast is served aboard the sleeper train as it approaches Luxor, often called the world's largest open-air museum for the sheer density of ancient monuments within and around the city. An Aten Tours representative meets you at the station and transfers you by private vehicle to your 4-star hotel for check-in—with time built in to freshen up before your Luxor West Bank tour begins, rather than heading straight from the train into a full day of sightseeing.
  • The tour opens at the Colossi of Memnon, two 18-meter stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that once flanked the entrance to his now-vanished mortuary temple. From there, your Egyptologist guide leads you into the Valley of the Kings, the New Kingdom's royal burial ground, where tombs cut deep into the mountainside are decorated with funerary texts meant to guide each pharaoh through the afterlife—a site that rewards a guide's explanation far more than a self-guided walk-through. The day continues to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, a three-tiered mortuary temple built into the cliffs for Egypt's most prominent female pharaoh, widely considered one of the most striking pieces of architecture in Egypt.
  • After the tour, you're transferred back to your hotel, with the rest of the evening free. An optional sound and light show at Karnak Temple can be arranged for the evening on request—it's not included in the base package. Overnight in Luxor.
Day5

Karnak & Luxor Temples — East Bank Tour & Return to Cairo
  • After breakfast at your hotel, your Egyptologist guide leads you to Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built in ancient Egypt and expanded by generations of pharaohs over more than two thousand years. Inside, the Hypostyle Hall's forest of massive columns — 134 in total — was designed to overwhelm visitors with the scale of the god Amun's power, an effect that still holds today even without the color that once covered every surface.
  • From Karnak, you continue to Luxor Temple, built primarily under Amenhotep III and Ramesses II and dedicated to Amun, where annual festivals once carried his statue by river procession from Karnak. Your guide explains the temple's role in ancient royal ceremony rather than leaving its columns and statues to speak for themselves.
  • With the East Bank tour complete, you're transferred to Luxor Railway Station to board the overnight sleeper train back to Cairo, with dinner served in your cabin as you depart. Breakfast is served on board the following morning as the train arrives back in Cairo, closing the loop on both overnight rail journeys included in this package.
Day6

Optional Alexandria Day Trip — Catacombs, Qaitbay Citadel & Bibliotheca Alexandrina
  • After breakfast on arrival back in Cairo, Day 6 is left open for rest or for an optional full-day excursion to Alexandria, Egypt's Mediterranean port city and former capital under the Ptolemies and Romans. The round trip from Cairo takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by modern air-conditioned coach. This add-on isn't part of the base package and can be arranged in advance if you'd like to extend your week beyond Cairo and Luxor.
  • The trip begins at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the largest and best-preserved Roman-era catacomb in Egypt, cut three levels underground and decorated with a blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman funerary imagery unique to Alexandria. From there, you continue to the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century fortress built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—using stone salvaged from the lighthouse's ruins, with views over the Mediterranean coastline.
  • The day closes with an exterior visit to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern successor to the ancient Library of Alexandria and one of Egypt's most recognizable pieces of contemporary architecture, before your private vehicle returns you to Cairo in the evening.
Day7

Final Departure from Cairo
  • After breakfast at your Cairo hotel, the rest of the morning is free—time to pack, relax by the pool, or take a last walk around the neighborhood before checkout. Your Aten Tours representative picks you up at the pre-arranged time and transfers you by private, air-conditioned vehicle to Cairo International Airport for your departure flight, with enough buffer built into the timing to account for Cairo traffic and airport check-in procedures.
  • This closes a week that covered two of Egypt's richest historical regions—the Old Kingdom monuments of Giza, Saqqara, and Memphis; the treasures of the Grand Egyptian Museum; Coptic and Islamic Cairo; and the New Kingdom temples and tombs of Luxor's East and West Banks—connected by two overnight sleeper train journeys rather than domestic flights, with a private Egyptologist guide throughout and no group to accommodate but your own.

  • The two overnight sleeper train journeys (Cairo–Luxor and Luxor–Cairo) are aboard shared-cabin trains operated to Egyptian Railway standards, not international sleeper standards. Cabins are compact, and dinner is served on board; travelers who prefer more space or a smoother ride should ask about a domestic flight alternative before booking.
  • The Day 6 Alexandria trip is optional and not included in the base package price — let us know in advance if you'd like it added.
  • Entry to the inner burial chambers of the pyramids at Giza is not included and can be arranged locally for an extra fee, subject to availability on the day.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as several sites (Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Saqqara) involve uneven ground and some walking in open sun. Modest dress—shoulders and knees covered—is advised for visits to religious sites, including Old Cairo's churches and the Mohamed Ali Mosque.

Yes. Day 6 is left open for an optional full-day trip to Alexandria, covering the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Citadel of Qaitbay, and an exterior visit to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This add-on isn't part of the base package price and should be requested in advance.
 

The package includes airport meet-and-assist, all private air-conditioned transfers, 3 nights in a 4-star Cairo hotel and 1 night in a 4-star Luxor hotel (both with daily breakfast), 2 nights of half-board sleeper train travel, a private Egyptologist guide throughout, entrance fees to all sites in the itinerary, and portage service. The Egypt entry visa, inner pyramid chamber tickets, camel riding, and the optional Alexandria day trip are not included.
 

The sleeper train follows Egyptian Railway standards rather than international sleeper-train standards, with compact shared cabins. Dinner is served on board for the Cairo–Luxor leg and breakfast for the return to Cairo. Travelers who prefer more space or a faster journey can ask about a domestic flight alternative before booking.
 

Seven days is enough to see the essential sites of both cities without rushing: three days in Cairo for Giza, Saqqara, and the city's museums and old quarters, one day for Luxor's East and West Banks, and two nights spent traveling by sleeper train between the cities. This tour uses that structure, including a day held open for rest or an optional Alexandria add-on.
